APOEL vs Real Madrid

Milan vs Barcelona

Its quarter finals time in the Champions League and there are some fantastic games this midweek with no bigger than a classic David and Goliath battle betwen one of Europe’s powerhouse clubs Real Madrid taking on little known Cypriot club Apoel Nicosia from Cyprus. Apoel Nicosia have proved the fairytale of the tournament, becoming the first Cypriot club to reach the knockout stages, before taking it a step further with a shock win over Lyon in the round of 16.

It’s been a dream run, but reality is about to set in for the minnows when they face the might of Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Predictably, the La Liga leaders are short-priced favourites at $1.27 for the first leg in Cyprus, leaving Apoel at the juicy odds of $11 to spring a surprise. While Apoel have proved hard to write off, you can’t help but feel the gulf in class will prove a little too much here, particularly with an in-form Cristiano Ronaldo at the peak of his powers with five goals in his past four CL games.

That’s not to say it’s going to be a stroll in the park for the Spanish side.

Apoel have won five of their seven home games in the tournament this season and have not conceded more than two goals in any of their 14 matches. That may make the under 3.5 goals ($1.45) an attractive proposition, or perhaps even under 1.5 ($4.75) for the daring.

In Tuesday’s other quarter-final, Chelsea carry England’s hopes into the last eight when they face in-form Portuguese side Benfica away from home. The Blues have looked an improved outfit under Roberto Di Matteo, but home and away form looks the dominating factor here.

Benfica are unbeaten in 10 European home outings dating back to December 2010, while Chelsea are without a win in their past six away CL encounters.

Given that, Benfica Draw no Bet ($1.74) looks decent value while Chelsea might be happy to take a draw ($3.25) into the return leg.

Wednesday’s  matches features a clash of the titans in Barcelona v AC Milan and the Italian leaders look decent value at $4.20 to win or $2.05 with the handicap at home.

They are known for rising to the big occasion and held Barca 2-2 away earlier in the tournament, though Lionel Messi’s five-goal heroics against Bayer Leverkusen are surely cause for concern.

The final match-up pits French side Marseille against in-form German giants Bayern Munich. Even away from home, Bayern look nicely priced at $1.88, following their 7-0 demolition of Basel, against their French opponents, who are struggling domestically.
